We spent four days on the Oregon coast and my boys discovered the largest sand box ever. They could have played for hours every day. We stayed at Uncle Rich and Aunt Sheri's beach house and it was so beautiful.
There was a time where I just stood in the waves and let them crash against me for about 45 minutes. I was just staring out and I knew I should go in and help fix dinner, but I couldn't budge. My boys were making tons of little fist castles and hoping the foam on the edge of the waves would reach them and destroy them. I knew they were delightfully occupied and I was so struck with the power and beauty of the ocean, I just soaked it in. It didn't even seem cold to me.
Staying at Rich and Sheri's was better than any hotel because it was so cozy and lovely and we got to eat just what we wanted: spaghetti, cinnamon rolls, eggs and sausage... blackberry shakes! Ah... vacation was sweet.
I had just finished my first draft of my play before we left Alberta, and it felt good to not have any obligation hanging over me other than mothering.
There was a pool at the beach too and Weston nearly learned to tread water on his own. He's so cute when he swims under water. He doesn't use his arms, but pumps his hips up and down like an inch worm. Both boys love the water. It's a wonderful way for them to tire themselves out.
We hardly had time to read at bedtimes because they were asleep after about 7 deep breaths.
The weather was so comfortable and warm. Perfect.
Our day was scheduled around mealtimes and food never tastes so good as when you've been playing hard outside.
Donovan was a real go-getter with the waves. He wanted to go out further, but I only let him go up to his middle with the strong undertoe and all. He loved the tickly sensation of the sand rushing away from under his feet.
Weston was much more of sand castle maker. A number of times we played Wilderness Family and would find to "Y" shaped sticks of driftwood to make a fire for our salmon and seaweed. Then the helicopter would fly over and we had to run for cover from the bad guys who were "shooting" at us.
Ah... what a wonderful playground.
My only disappointment was that David was not with us to see their glee.
