Yesterday was full. We went to the Inn for a special lunch. Oh, the soup was so good: coconut curry chicken with roasted red peppers! Then we each had a small salad and a plate of hot salmon, beef tips, or turkey dinner! Whehoo! (Yes, the family picture is meant to be silly, that's why I'm cross-eyed.)
We had two shows yesterday and then... done. It was strange in the end. Sad to leave my lovely cast and crew, and yet longing for home, too. I have an odd sense of displacement this morning, but we set to wrapping all the same. Here I was feeling bad that both Donovan and Weston will not open the gifts they ordered from Santa... and Dave, true to form, comments on how MANY gifts there are! I had to chuckle. This happens every year. Seriously though, I hope we can help our kids understand that disappointment can be part of Christmas too.
Dave and the boys came to the matinee yesterday, and Donovan was the first one to pipe up during my talk show with a question. "What do you do if the Christmas tree falls down?" he asked. We have a tall tree on stage with us. "Well, " I said, "then we hope for a hero to run up and catch it!" "Or, we just let it fall and then we put it back up! And if it's ruined, that's OK. You see, Christmas is not really in the tree, and Christmas is not in the presents, -- Christmas is in our hearts." Later Donovan told me, "I had to really gather my courage to ask that."
A lot of us in the cast and crew were snapping photos back stage yesterday. We had a few group hugs and then... farewell and Merry Christmas. I didn't go to the final cast gathering; I couldn't somehow. All I could think of was home, so with my pack on my back I turned my tall rubber boots in that crunchy/snowy direction and said goodbye to "Yolanda!" --It was a good final show with a great full house... I just needed to get back to mine.
