Outdoor play

It feels like I've spent more time outdoors this past week than I have all winter, thanks to my boys.
If Weston wouldn't ask for a bike ride every day, I'd probably fritter my time away on the computer  or something.  Well, I do enjoy my little windows of writing my play, but I'd stretch them into marathons and then eat and sleep WORSE than if I didn't have a reason to get up early in the morning because my kid needs to get on the bus.  Speaking of which... what am I going to do once school is out?  Yikes.
David and Weston went to Donovan's school today for outdoor day.  I love it.  How fun.  Weston says some of the 2nd graders even taught him how to play four square.  I think he's ready.
I'm so grateful for the green grass and the cooler weather today in Rosebud.  This is my kinda comfort weather.  It's fresh and moist and lightly breezy.  I don't like being hot.  But being home more instead of working at the theatre has led to frequent snacking and my tummy is bulging over my waistline in a flagrant way.  Part of me doesn't care.  This is my 40 year old body; get used to it.  But part of me knows I'm living on borrowed time with my cholesterol intake and sweets.... so there's my good health to consider.
Oh my boys are so dear.  Weston is really alert right now and wanting to know things.  As we stopped to pick up the mail on our bikes he asked, "Which is faster mom, a car, a bike... or the wind?"  "Whoa" I said, "what an interesting question.  It depends.   Sometimes each one could be faster. "  "Well, I just rode my bike past that car and I was going faster than the wind!" he asserted.  --There you go.
Fridays are better at our house than the rest of the week.  For one, Donovan gets a shorter day at school and he knows it's a potential movie night.  But another thing is that there is no matinee at the theatre.  We can work around the house for four hours at a time and forget we're in a show at all.  Of course Dave has to leave tonight, but it's been nice to have him around.
The bugs are out now, and the bees.  I forgot about that part of summer.  Now that the blossoms are out, the insects are making busy.  Oh, I love seeing the branches bend in the wind now that they're in full shiny green leaf!  The wind is so exciting here because it shoves the clouds ahead of it and you can see them coming for miles.  The birds start singing something fierce and the mosquitos rise quickly to get one last vampire bite before having to hide in the tall grasses.  I can actually smell the rain coming.  Ahh, yes.  I'm grateful now for my shelter... but only because I got to spend some golden hours outside with my children.  They encourage me to join them in the wind, the buzz and fragrance of life changing all around me.  I wish I could bottle it up for a dark cold winter morning.  Time speeds faster than the wind.
