Busy getting reacquainted with our things

What an adjustment this is - coming back and suddenly looking school in the face. All four of us have new adventures to embark on. Donovan is heading into grade three, Weston is starting kindergarten, Dave and I will teach a new acting class on musical theatre, and I will teach faith and art for the first time. The new curriculum development is daunting and time consuming and tough when one wants to wring the last moments of summer out of the week.
Well... we really are getting to play some too. Last night we got dressed up and drove into Calgary to see The Lion King! 'Course the guys wouldn't get out of the car for the quick picture so you can barely see what they're wearing. - Supper was fine, but it was still a bit of a stresser going down 16th avenue with all the traffic. We were pretty rushed by the end so Dave dropped us off at the door, but he forgot to give me the tickets, so I left the boys with Kendra and Conrad (who had rode in with us) and ran after the van in my heels. Sure enough, I came upon Dave just as he was scrambling for cash to pay the parking man and thankfully I had some. Whew! Anyway we made it in, and made it up to our second balcony seats in good time. We were so excited!! That first scene is so magical! I was in awe and so happy to see my boys encounter all the magic and imagination. We got home super late, but that seems to be our schedule right now: up late and to bed late.
Tomorrow we'll go shopping and stock our fridge again and pick up a few more school supplies for Donovan. I haven't written on my play for 20 days and I feel out of wack. Funny how my writing routine really sharpened my focus and gave me a schedule. Now I feel a bit overwhelmed with all the tasks before me, so I think I need to sit down with Dave and have us both block out some time.
I didn't mention that I got to stay with Dave's sister and brother in law (Kevin and Michelle) down in Jacksonville near Ashland. Here they are in their festive lounging garb - you should see their room full of paraphernalia for Burning Man! It was great to see them and have a wonderful place to stay in the midst of my shopping/theatre/solo adventure.
Since I've been home (and not busy writing) I've been struck with the urge to cook. (Must be a grounding thing.) Anyway, today I made a fun quiche out of leftover butter chicken and rice, garlic, and red pepper with spicy salami. Then I made a fun crust out of rye flour and pine nuts. It was so crunchy and almost sweet. Pretty good for using up leftovers if I may say.
Then Dave picked off quite a few choke cherries from our tree and I cooked them down and strained them, hoping to make syrup for tomorrow. Donovan was very interested and wanted to add the sugar to the strained juice, but then he started adding more things like maple syrup. [I guess it didn't quite smell like syrup to him.] Well, before I knew it, I smelled something burning. :( --So, that experiment didn't turn out nearly so well after hours put into it.
Weston and Donovan have been playing inside the sleeping bags on our living room floor. Poor West got stepped on by Dave who didn't know he was hiding inside, but then I got a snapshot of him peeking through a hole in the bottom with Donovan peeking behind. They're so funny. I couldn't read them a story tonight before bed because we spent so long playing monopoly, and then so long picking up all the Lego's, toys, and costumes they had gotten out over the last two days. After two weeks, their old toys seem almost new to them.
Maybe that's what vacation does for me too. Going back home makes everything there seem new and alive, and coming back to Alberta helps me appreciate its differences. So, change of perspective is good. -Even if it makes for a busy catch up time.
