Day one of our trip: Sparwood and Spirit Lake

Two weeks ago we left after a brief instructor meeting and took off in our van with tenting supplies, snacks, pillows and blankets and DVD's and started toward the Idaho boarder. I'd never driven south on the Number 2 and then West on the 3 and it was fascinating to come across all the wind turbines. It was gorgeous. Stunning. The weather was absolutely beautiful and the mountains, streams, deer, rocks and trees -- breathtaking. Of course the boys were more interested in watching movies, but we finally got them out and about in Sparwood, BC -- home of the world's largest truck! They loved it.
Then we piled back in and headed for the boarder. There was no long wait and no trouble (course I was at the wheel...) I'm convinced that women have less flack from boarder guards than long haired men. HA. The guy looked over at Dave and the first thing he said was, "So what criminal activity have you been involved in?" Silence. (Dave was deliberating whether to joke back or play it straight.) Finally he said rather sincerely, "Just being an actor." Thankfully the guard left it at that. Until he asked if we were truly married and if we were travelling with our own biological children in the back seat. Yes, we assured him on both accounts.
Then we were off singing Neil Diamond's "We come to America......(pause long enough for David to find it irresitable to join in...) --TODAY! Dah nah nah nah nah nah NAH! We come to America... and so forth. It's our little ritual for us old Americans. That's when our kids say, "I'm Canadian."
We wormed our way down a two lane highway into northern Idaho through more stunning territory and little traffic. We had plenty of snacks in the car so we really didn't have to stop until we reached our meeting place with Dave's cousin Dion.
Dion's girlfriend Jessica's dad lives near Spirit Lake in a beautiful lodge like house in the woods. Amazing and quiet. They treated us to a full second supper with LindbergSnider seasoned pork chops, deep fried okra (delicious!) and sweet white corn. Weston ate his whole meal. Then we set up our tents in the back yard facing the woods where moose roamed and the boys got to watch a cartoon of Clifford the Big Red Dog on a BIG Black screen. Jessica and her family and her dogs were very welcoming and generous and by the time we left the next morning, the boys were smitten and didn't want to leave.
Tune in next time for: Idaho living Day two: the fam.
