I made s'more cookies yesterday. I just wrapped chocolate cookie dough around some mini marsh-mallows and then sandwiched them between graham crackers when I was done. Some of the batter I just used with M&Ms instead.
The storm I spoke about yesterday never burst with rain or lightning but it sure shook us with HUGE gusts of wind. I got a picture of some of the clouds after they had passed over to the east. It's like they were totally flat on the bottom but tall and fluffy on top.
Today we had some free time after church so we did some cleaning (all of us - which is great) and then we went up Hamm Hill to fly kites. After all the windy days we've been having I thought it would be a breeze (pun intended) but it was choppy and then suddenly still, and then the wind would shift. All of a sudden our kite would just dive straight down. Amazing. Most of the time was pretty good though. The boys of course both had turns getting tangled in the string. Poor Weston had let the string wrap around his wrist so tight it was almost purple! I spent a lot of time undoing knots or chasing fallen kites. Once Weston let go and had to chase the string handle half way down the hill as fast as his little legs would carry him! It was thrilling to watch, I thought we'd lose it, but he caught it with his foot.
Once Dave came up the hill things got easier, but after a while the boys got bored or frustrated so it was just David and I flying kites for a good 20 minutes. It was beautiful. So quiet. I guess not many trucks come through Rosebud on Sunday. I'd never thought of that before. So peaceful and fun to hold a kite. I couldn't remember if we had ever taken time to do that together before. It was nice.
Getting the boys to help clean the bathroom and kitchen floors was good. It was strange that I had a thought about resting on the Sabbath and here we were finding some time to get things done. It made me think about what the Sabbath means for me. I think what's most important is to set aside time to remember and let life happen rather than working to make things happen.
The cleaning needed to be done and I'm glad we did it. But the kite flying... just me and the blue sky and the golden fields and a sail at the end of a string, riding the waves of wind.
That felt like resting. That made my day feel like a Sabbath!
